Giraffes In The Wild
Giraffes in the wild usually live up to 25 years, a few less than Giraffes in captivity. In the wild, Giraffes get around 20 minutes of sleep a day. They dont sleep for more than five minutes at a time so they can be aware of nearby predators. Giraffes living in the wild usually prefer ares loaded with shrubs, trees, savannas, grasslands and open woodlands. They can mostly be found in east Africa or southwest Africa.
Giraffes dont usually come too much in contact with humans and animals, but when they do it's usually animals such as lions, leopards, hyenas, and others. Males in the wild duel between other males for mating partners. This process is called necking, an it involves two male Giraffes showing size and strength to eachother. They do this by dropping low and swinging their necks into the other Giraffe. Afterwards, the other Giraffe does it back and the cycle keeps going with the two male Giraffes necking.
In the wild, Giraffes browse bushes and trees. During the dry season, Giraffes favor evergreen leaves. When seasons of rain appear, Giraffes in the wild like to switch to new leaves that have just sprouted. They also like to eat what all Giraffes eat which is twigs, and trees. In fact, they can eat up to 66 kilograms a day. Remember, Giraffes are herbivores, which means their desire is for acacia leaves, mimosa leaves, apricot trees etc.
